So... I've been doing a little bit of research on Far Infrared Rays because even though I've already felt some of the effects, I really don't know much about it. What is it really? What does it do? And what are the benefits of FIR other than weight loss? Thanks to the power of the internet (or rather, Google), all of that information is just a click away. Here's a summary of what I've found:
The sun isn't just a source of light. That same light becomes energy that living things need in order to grow and thrive. Far infrared rays (FIR) are an invisible spectrum of sunlight discovered by the German-born British astronomer, Sir Frederick William Herschel, in the year 1800. (1) One fine day, he was testing filters for the sun so he could observe sun spots, and was surprised to discover that when he used the red filter there was a lot of heat produced. (2)
FIR are present in the spectrum between visible light and microwaves. This invisible band of light is felt as heat. Approximately 80% of solar energy is made up of FIR. Unlike high-frequency ultraviolet (UV) rays, which can cause sunburns and skin cancer, FIR does not damage our skin. Therefore, FIR can help us derive some of the benefits of sunlight even when we don't have regular access to it. (3)
FIR is well absorbed when it hits a substance. Therefore, it has a high penetration attribute, and when we are exposed to it we feel warm. For example, we feel much more warmth from sunlight at 30 degrees Celsius than we do in water at the same temperature. This is because FIR in sunlight penetrates deeply into our skin and generates heat. This heat helps remove bacteria, which is the cause of numerous diseases; expands capillaries; and helps blood circulation. Besides that, when this heat comes into contact with moisture and protein molecules in our cells, it delicately vibrates the cells 2,000 times per minute (known as resonance), thus activating the cell tissues; which makes it effective in the prevention of aging (awet muda!), increasing our metabolism (bakar lemak!), and relieving chronic fatigue (sihat & cergas!).
